A FIVE-STEP RESET

How to restart an unfinished creative project

The first job is not to finish. It is to make the project familiar again and find one useful move that fits the energy you have today.

1. Put the project where you can see it

Bring out the pottery piece, open the document or collect the photos into one place. Do not organise everything yet. Your goal is simply to replace the vague memory with visible evidence.

2. Write what is already true

Record what has been made, what you liked and what did not work. A few plain facts are more useful than a perfect project history. For example: “The pointed petals work; the base is still too wide.”

3. Name the decision that is blocking you

Paused projects often contain a choice that has not been made. Name it: colour, size, audience, material or which version to continue. If you cannot decide now, make “compare two options” the next action.

4. Choose a move small enough to begin

Use a visible action that takes roughly five to twenty minutes: find the glaze test, sketch two handles, reread one page or rename the current file. Avoid vague instructions such as “work on the project”.

5. Pause deliberately next time

Before you leave, save a photo or link, one sentence about your latest decision and the next physical move. Deliberate pausing turns stopping into part of the method, not a failure.
